From a Radio Broadcast to the Jimmy Fund Blog
“…Now, by the magic of the radio, we are going to span the breadth of the United States and take you right up to the bedside of Jimmy in one of America’s great cities, Boston, Massachusetts and into one of America’s great hospitals…” — Ralph Edwards, May 22, 1948.

On a national radio broadcast, millions heard 12-year-old cancer patient dubbed, “Jimmy,” visit with his heroes, the Boston Braves, as they stood by his hospital bed. Inspired by Jimmy’s story, contributions from across Boston and the country came in to help buy Jimmy a television so all the pediatric cancer patients could watch the Braves play. Without knowing it then, young Jimmy united a community and launched the Jimmy Fund.
From those first moments on air in 1948, the Jimmy Fund has brought the community together in a joint effort to raise money to end cancer. More than 65 years later, millions of people have joined the Jimmy Fund’s fight against cancer in adults and children at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
